All About Fluoride

Fluoride is a natural mineral found in many of our water sources, fruits, and vegetables. When fluoride is concentrated just enough, it helps repair tooth surfaces from damage. Fluoride can prevent cavities. This is why dentists may use fluoride varnish* on your teeth after cleaning, and recommend optimally fluoridated** water and brushing with toothpaste containing fluoride.

*Fluoride varnish is a solution that is applied directly to your tooth surface by a dentist or health professional. It's a TOPICAL treatment.

**optimally fluoridated water means water that has enough fluoride in it to help protect and repair teeth. Sometimes water has this amount of fluoride naturally. Sometimes water is treated by trained water systems operators and calibrated water systems to bring it up to the optimal level of fluoridation. Either way, this is an INTERNAL treatment.
